Impact

Evaluations of our program have consistently shown an improvement in asthma outcomes and significant reductions in environmental triggers such as mold, dust, and the use of insecticides. The effectiveness of A.I.R. Harlem underscores the utility of community-based health programs in addressing health disparities in vulnerable populations.

We measure program success using precise data collection and analysis tools. Our data show that the program is keeping kids healthy and in school.

Program Effectiveness Measures*

  • The percentage of participants admitted to the ER decreased by more than half
  • The percentage of participants hospitalized overnight decreased by 79%
  • The proportion of kids who reported missing school within the last 14 days decreased from 21% to 11%
  • Asthma symptoms were significantly reduced: wheezing and tightness of chest, having to slowdown childhood activities because of asthma, and waking up at night due to asthma
  • Smoking inside the home decreased from 7% to less than 1%
